I posted a picture on Fall For DIY’s Facebook page the other day which had a lot of people telling me off for my choice of footwear. All in good spirits of course, but in any case I leapt to the defence of my sandal choice (well, cried a bit) and vowed to keep wearing them until my toes get – just a bit – numb (well, made whining noises). You get the gist. I don’t want to stop wearing sandals just because we’re prone to downpours at a moments notice or because when I step on the wrong paving… Read More
DIY Macrame Hanging… Pumpkins (& Squash)
Octobers of the past always hold such great memories for me. Not only is it my birthday month (more on that later) but luckily it falls just a few days before Halloween. My childhood birthday parties were spent having the best sleepover parties. All dressed up like witches in black bin bag dresses (we were creative) and cardboard pointed hats watching Hocus Pocus, Death Becomes Her and Beetlejuice. Then I discovered pumpkin pie and things just got a whole better! It’s taken a long time for the UK to embrace the humble squash and some of the more exotic varieties are still… Read More
DIY Paint Dipped Picture Frames
A lot of focus in my office update is going on practical solutions and furniture makeovers. I’m spending most of my time and efforts in creating a space that is clutter free, organised and easy to work in. This is a much bigger project than I had previously thought. It turns out my clutter is not organised so easily…. Because of this one of the things I have been overlooking is a little decoration. Like everything else I’ve been keeping the walls clean and white, but although having a blank canvas to work on might be great for photos, it’s… Read More
Simple Skills | Dipped
The thing about this tutorial is it seems a bit self explanatory really. Can I actually get away with a skills tutorial on dipped pencils!? It seems a bit patronising and I know you guys can figure out how to dip a pencil into a can of paint… not rocket science here is it? But then I started thinking about all the stupid mistakes I make on a daily basis. How I’ve expected something to be easy and overlooked a key component that changes the outcome. Hopefully in this new series, Simple Skills I will make all the mistakes for you and… Read More
Fall For… Making the Rounds
In most cases if we’re talking rounds I’ll be propping up a bar somewhere having a great time. Partying aside, rounds have always been a popular shape in every design aspect. I mean who doesn’t love a good polka dot every now and then. This round up (yep) includes a collection of great DIY ways to get more circles into you life and why wouldn’t you? Easy on the eye, soft and comforting. This round’s on me: Mouse Mat by the ever talented Rachel at The Crafted Life. Northstory upcycles always amaze me and this hanging planter is no exception. I’ve… Read More
DIY Wire Mesh Baskets
Storage people! How it is I never seem to have the right kind. When I need big boxes I can only find tiny ones, when I need things hidden all I have are clear containers and visa versa. My storage solutions need some serious consideration if I’m ever going to have an organised studio. So I figured I’d kill two birds with one stone. Make some crates to store my ever growing yarn collection and document the process so you lot can do the same! Win win! Materials: Galvanised Wire Mesh 0.5mm wire Wire Cutters/Jewellery Wire Cutters (for a closer… Read More
How to Sew with Difficult Fabrics
I don’t have a huge amount of sewing DIYs on this blog, which is odd because I have a degree in textile design, I’ve owned my sewing machine for nearly 12 years and I use it on a regular basis. But I could do with brushing up on my dressmaking skills. I realised recently that learning to sew and learning to make clothes are two completely different skills and I’m in need of practice for the latter! I’m already thinking ahead to the new year (the blogger in me takes over) and next years resolution is to make one item of… Read More
Fall For… September Dress Code
There’s no point denying it. I’m a jeans and jumper aficionado. I’ll champion a good ‘well fitting jumper and rolled up jeans’ combo until the day they stop making them. So this time of year I gladly start throwing on the layers and getting a bit cozy. I also have to remind myself that just because it’s getting colder (and I want to leave the house less) not to leave my outfits devoid of all style. It’s really easy to stick to the basics and be done with it. Luckily September is a great transitional month. I can just about cling… Read More
