One of the most interesting or wonderful or sometimes very terrifying things about parenting is seeing a miniature version of yourself growing up before your very eyes. Something that never fails to make my heart burst is watching them start to form their own interests and become obsessed with learning a new skill or discovering a new activity.
I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve always got a camera in my hand or because of how much I enjoy getting all our old pictures out, but both of them love taking photos and are surprisingly good at it – I mean, for a five and a two year old at least. But with all the digital advances in photography in recent years this often leads to hundreds of throw away photos that no one looks at ever again. And I have the camera roll on my phone to prove it!
That’s why I love the Instax Mini 12 Instant Cameras from Very.co.uk. We took our cameras out for a spin to document a sunny day at our local botanical gardens. But instead of taking hundreds of photos we were more intentional about the photos we took and had so much fun waiting to see the pictures develop! There were a lot of laughs over the selfies. The little mirror on the front is so handy to get everyone in shot so they’re really easy to take!
Amber was a little young to take the photos on her own, but with some help she seemed to really enjoy the process. But Ollen really got to grips with the camera quickly. The shape of the camera naturally stops your fingers covering the lens and the button to take the photos is easy to find and press. He ran around the park looking for the perfect picture and in the end he took some really incredible shots of the flowers and plants. We gave him a limit to the photos he could take and this meant he really thought about what he wanted to document and how to do it. A far cry from the random 80 photos of a crack in the pavement he often takes! The pictures are so bright and clear that we decided to frame them alongside some of the family photos we took.
I wanted to make a really fun photo frame to keep our memories of the day in. I decided to use an old frame and add bobbins to the outside with wood glue. I like using wood glue rather than a glue gun because it takes longer to dry. This lets you move the bobbins into place evenly around the frame before the glue has dried. Then I sprayed the frame with a plastic primer and this very cute pink paint to match the camera’s bright colours that both of the kids loved!
