My favourite part of this weeks make it easy necklace is the rubber.
Do you ever get that feeling of invisibility sometimes? Sort of like you’re just slipping through the cracks a little. I was listening to an episode of This American Life the other day that explored the idea of superpowers. Which would you choose; invisibility or flight? Flight was the ideal, unashamed power whereas invisibility was often the darker, solitary choice. Flight was a force for good and invisibility mysterious and lets be honest, the best way to steal things; sweaters, travel, electrical equipment and most of all secret shower glances.
But it’s worth noting that invisibility is a lot more practical for everyday life and if you really think about it invisibility is in fact much more useful to have when fighting crime. It’s just a lot less heroic. It’s often the people who are seemingly invisible in life that are doing the most and making the biggest impact. They just don’t get to show off about it.
So what’s the point of the rubber. It slips into the copper tube and is only barely seen. Instead it lifts the copper up off the rope both protecting the fibres and creating a balance. It might be almost invisible but it reflects the light to give it form. It’s the unsung hero of the necklace yet it’s definitely the best part. If you like this necklace you can make it easy with the following tutorial.
Materials:
- 9mm Black Rope
- 12mm Rubber Tube
- 15mm Copper Pipe
- Pipe Cutter
- E6000 Adhesive
*I’ve done the hard work for you and found links so you can easily buy the materials I’ve used if you like. Click on the materials above to go straight to them. They are affiliate links so if you choose to buy I make a tiny bit of dollar to put towards new projects!
Instructions:
Measure the rope the the length you would like your necklace making sure it’s loose enough to fit over your head and cut. Cut off sections of tube and pipe around 2″ long and thread them onto the rope. Cut another section of rubber pipe and glue both ends of the rope into it. You can spray paint this cream before if you want it to be exactly the same. My view? It’s at the back and if I can’t see it, well I don’t care so much….
