Introducing…

Most of the time when you see baby announcements on Instagram or blogs there’s usually a few key details included. The time and date of the birth, the weight and maybe most importantly the name of the baby. Our announcement didn’t include any of this information. Maybe I was just too tired or smitten with this boy of ours. But those details didn’t make it into the post. Either because they didn’t seem important at the time or because we didn’t know them yet.

Obviously we knew when he was born and his weight (4.20am and 8lb 3) but we choose not to name him at this point. We always knew we’d be taking some time after the birth to choose a name. We didn’t know if he was going to be a boy or a girl (that makes for an interesting birth story, but maybe I’ll share that another time) and while we had some potential names we wanted to wait and see what suited him. We were in no rush to give our baby a name.

(Look at that squishy face!)

The whole process was also made more complicated because we’re not married. I never wanted to change my name but having a baby made me reconsider my stance on this. Although he did propose and we’re now engaged, when we first began to discuss his surname this wasn’t on the cards. Not for me at least. So I spent many months going back and forth between wanting to stick to my principles and wanting to make life easier. The making life easier won, unsurprisingly. Life with a newborn is hard enough!

I could talk about our choices all day long but we’re all here for one thing, so let’s get to it. Introducing… Ollen Bridgwood Hill. (Ollen is pronounced like pollen.) It has Scottish/Nordic roots which we loved because Alex has a Scottish family background and we both love Whiskey! Haha!
